1. Biotechnology in the Field

Description: Biotechnology offers creative solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing agriculture. In this science-based workshop, participants will learn the basics about biotechnology and practice a variety of lab activities!

2. Lessons from the Growing Classroom – School Gardens
Presented by Judy Honerkamp, Bauer Speck Elementary School
Grade Level: 4-6
Topic: School Gardens, Academic Standards, Afterschool
Description: A school garden is a living growing laboratory providing students learning opportunities to investigate, observe, problem solve, and get their hands dirty. In schools today garden-based learning provided by an outdoor classroom is needed more than ever. Participants will experience hands-on standards-based lessons of science, math, language, social studies curriculum that are easily taught in the school garden classroom.

3. Celebrate America
Presented by Christie Van Egmond, CA Beef Council

Topic: History, Social Studies, Agriculture, Curriculum
Description: Help students explore the foods and traditions of their own individual cultural backgrounds and gather information about how and when their families came to America. Students will discover the many differences, including clothing, traditions and ethnic foods. 4. Nutrition Education Made Easy

Description: Be the first to experience Dairy Council of California's NEW program materials! This interactive workshop will provide an overview of nutrition information, demonstrate how to use Dairy Council of California's free classroom programs and how to integrate our web-based resources. Participants will discover how healthy and physically fit students achieve more academically. Don't miss out!

5. Hot Topics: Wildfires & You
Presented by Shaney Emerson, CA Forest Foundation
Grade Level: 4-8
Topic: Natural Resources
Description: Students see news reports of California wildfires each year. Use this 6th grade curriculum to teach students about the fire triangle, heat transfer, the history of wildfires and our California forests. Lab activities allow students to carry out defensible space plans for their homes, measure, and predict local wildfire danger. Lessons are aligned to 6th grade California Standards and are adaptable for Grades 4-8. Additional fire education materials provided by CAL FIRE and Project Learning Tree.

1. What's "Blue and Gold" and "Green and White" - Youth Garden Programs
Presented by Don Borges, Modesto Junior College

Description: Are school gardens truly making a difference in the education and health of California students? Hear what these central valley 4-H and FFA members have to say about their involvement with school gardens. Learn what motivates them and their fellow students to dig in and get their hands dirty. Try your hand at a few garden-based activities as lead by the students.

2. Farm to School

Description: The Farm to School movement in California is on the brink of exploding! Learn about how this model program creates an excellent opportunity for farmers to diversify their business and a way for school food service directors to connect with area farms. Join the movement by taking steps to bring together school officials, food service directors, contracted food service providers, parents, distributors, processors, and producers to establish creative, mutually beneficial relationships that result in locally produced and processed food being consumed by students in California schools.

3. Renewable Resources: Energy and the Environment

4. Pink and Dude Chefs: Cooking in the Classroom!

Description: The Pink and Dude Chefs is an innovative culinary project offered through Cal Poly SLO’s Science through Translational Research in Diet and Exercise (STRIDE) program. Offering cooking classes for 12 to 14 year old girls and boys, the program is designed to teach nutrition through basic cooking skills. This after school enrichment program increases the students' confidence, knowledge and skills for cooking as one of the first steps for dietary improvement. Learn how cooking in your classroom can create amazing benefits for your students’ attitudes, academics and health.

5. Dirt Made my Lunch

Grade Level: K-6
